Strength and Robustness in UHMWPE Yarns

The UHMWPE yarn is much smaller and light in the physical which still can be used by itself or blended. Now that may sound like a big hairy word but it is in fact a very important substance and many services depend on its production.

Explaining UHMWPE Yarn

UHMWPE stands for ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene Wow, that's one super long name so let's take the time to get back to this step-by-step. Ultra-high-molecular-weight = the little bits in it are really long and have lots of links between them holding them all together. Polyethylene is just a type of plastic similar to those in water bottles and bags. The bottom line is, UHMWPE are super tough and strong plastic when you combine them all together.

How It's Made and Used

The UHMWPE yarn is manufactured with a special process named gel spinning. The recipe starts out with small pieces of UHMWPE that are combined in a liquid -- and the result is like an oozy gel. The gel is then whisked into lengthy fibers which can be interwoven to type the yarn. This is what makes it possible to grow the long fibers that are also strong and bonded.

One of the main things that makes UHMWPE yarn such a big deal is how one can use this strong material. It's so strong and tough that it was actually used to create bulletproof vests and helmets for soldiers rather than just armor. It is also used in fishing lines, sailboat ropes and bowstrings for archery. These are hard things that have to be made of heavy materials since they take massive amounts of pressure.

Improvements and Discoveries

Researchers are continuously pushing the envelope on making UHMWPE balls harder and tougher. A new UHMWPE material that has been developed using graphene, an incredibly strong and light carbon-based material is the most recent find.

This combination creates an even stronger substance used in a range of applications that is made up of UHMWPE and graphene. This could be used to manufacture car parts that are stronger and lighter, so cars would consume less fuel and produce fewer emissions.
